WordPress themes…overwhelming at best

I don't necessarily dislike new themes and code...I actually think they're pretty fun. But it can be frustrating when you feel like you have a pretty good grasp of what's going on, and then slowly realize that your blog is going down in a pretty, pretty ball of flame.
