How fun this this? Some of my favorite authors (especially Hallie Ephron, who teaches and speaks at the Willamette Writers Conference) who get together and blog about books and Downton Abbey and food (lobster bisque recipe, anyone?) It’s super entertaining. They took their name from the nail polish in the play The Women by Clare Boothe Luce. Although maybe the nail polish was only in the movie? Not sure. Doesn’t matter. I like it that they get as distracted from writing as I do. It’s a comfort. Much like lobster bisque. In other news, this is NOT one of the websites down today because of the SOPA – Protect IP Act protest. Nor is mine. But WordPress is. Tried to look up some information on a Plug-In and got sent to a scary black screen. I was about to panic and slam the screen closed all while busting out an exorcism chant, then realized all was well. Watched a little video, sent my letter to Congress… Basically feeling very proactive. Not that I’m against protection and internet safety and all, I’m just thinking that bills that haven’t been around very long and get the rushy-rushy treatment are a little dodgy. (And I’m really [...]

So not really a new favorite artist. I’ve owned a couple of his pieces for over a year now. Well. Not really a couple of pieces. One. One piece. But I have my eye on another… Afternoon Light is closest to the one I own. The colors are more muted in this one. Maybe mine’s earlier in the day… Tee hee. He recently had a Retrospective Exhibition in September and put the website up, and that’s when I first saw his etchings. Which are amazing. That’s my real next goal. I have one of the paintings, now I need one of those insanely detailed etchings. He’s nearly impossible to find on the Internet because of that damn name. Anytime you look up anything close to Scott FitzGerald, naturally F. Scott Fitzgerald comes up. And then if you try adding “etchings” or “paintings” it doesn’t help, because then you get a bunch of images of F. Scott Fitzgerald. He’s not a bad looking guy, even if it does look like he used a tube of Brylcreem a day. It’s just not what I wanted. (Which they still make. The Brylcreem, I mean. I kid you not. Check it out here. Isn’t [...]

…I would have heard of this woman. Yet I never have. A friend (after reading one of my previous posts about writing and of course not commenting on the blog so that it looks good and gives me a higher count on my statistics…not that I’m bitter…) recommended this book to me. It was like the mothership was calling me home. Almost as good as when I read Margaret Fuller for the first time. I had really been struggling to really get all of these thoughts and feelings into a comprehensive idea and she came along at just the right time and said, “Oh, is this what you mean?” And I said, “Yes! Yes, that’s exactly what I mean! How did you know? Can I take you out for a cup of coffee?” She’s the perfect mix of poetry and prose, feminine and masculine, and then has this sort of nineteenth-century snarkiness thrown in every once in a while. So much better than Emerson and Thoreau, who always takes themselves far too seriously. But I digress. Tillie isn’t exactly snarky. She’s more like the street-smart Grandma I never had. Doesn’t seem like she would take much shit from anyone.

And with a little homage to Amy Winehouse… My tears have dried. I didn’t really cry, but I thought I might if I didn’t get the site fixed today. I set aside my morning to work on it. Went through all the problems again and got the exact same error message about the parent directory not being found when I tried to upload music or an image. Looked online and in the forums and got a lot of advice on changing permissions (which other people were adamantly against) and deleting and re-uploading the entire site (which I was against). Finally, I contacted my hosting provider and a lovely man named Ryan wrote back and said everything looked good on my General Settings page–had I made any changes since submitting the support ticket? No, but I went and double checked anyway. Under the Media Settings, I found that the directory file to which I was supposed to be uploading was wrong. A couple of deletes and fixes in the file name later, all was well. So simple. And I could have sworn I had already checked that. A thank you to Ryan and I’m all set again.

Another one from Ward and Brownlee. A “sequel”, they call it, to Rare Earth. I’m going to have to make these extinction books their own category. “How to Ruin a Perfectly Good Day” should be its name. Earth is a middle-aged woman, run ragged by her hundreds of children, asshole of a husband, and the fact that she’s taken up smoking. Humans are the cigarettes. I haven’t decided who the asshole husband is in my version of Ward and Brownlee’s analogy. They don’t provide one, but I’m sure there must be. There usually is. Could it be the Sun? It’s the one dying in the first place and apparently will get all grumpy about it and take it out on Earth. The Moon? That doesn’t seem right. The Moon has been quite the little helper/worker bee for the Earth since it first settled into orbit. Can’t hardly use it in the role of abusive jerk. This book uses phrases like “silicate-carbonate geochemical cycle,” which sounds like a good band name. And again, like Rare Earth, it points out all of the chance occurrences and lucky breaks that made conditions just right for life. If CO2 levels hadn’t dropped as significantly [...]
