My tears have dried. I didn’t really cry, but I thought I might if I didn’t get the site fixed today. I set aside my morning to work on it. Went through all the problems again and got the exact same error message about the parent directory not being found when I tried to upload music or an image. Looked online and in the forums and got a lot of advice on changing permissions (which other people were adamantly against) and deleting and re-uploading the entire site (which I was against).
Finally, I contacted my hosting provider and a lovely man named Ryan wrote back and said everything looked good on my General Settings page–had I made any changes since submitting the support ticket? No, but I went and double checked anyway. Under the Media Settings, I found that the directory file to which I was supposed to be uploading was wrong. A couple of deletes and fixes in the file name later, all was well.
So simple. And I could have sworn I had already checked that. A thank you to Ryan and I’m all set again.
